Sonam Wangchuk's Health Deteriorates on Day 17 of Indefinite Hunger Strike Over NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak
Sonam Wangchuk's health has deteriorated on the 17th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Having lost more than eight kilograms, he continues the protest despite declining health, while supporters allege police harassment and political leaders extend support ahead of the planned Parliament march on July 20.
Wangchuk began the indefinite hunger strike on June 28 after joining the protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party. The agitation seeks accountability for the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and calls for comprehensive reforms in the country's examination system. The protesters have also demanded compensation for the families of students who died by suicide following the controversy.
According to supporters, Wangchuk has lost more than eight kilograms since the hunger strike began. His latest health assessment recorded a blood pressure of 104/66 and a blood sugar level of 67. Despite significant muscle loss and deteriorating physical condition, he has remained steadfast in continuing the protest, while no response has been received from the government regarding the demands raised by the demonstrators.
Supporters have also alleged repeated police harassment during the ongoing protest. They claimed that tarpaulins erected at the protest site were removed and sanitation facilities were denied, creating additional difficulties for those participating in the demonstration.
The protest has received political backing from leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT), who have pledged their support ahead of a planned march to Parliament on July 20. The proposed march is expected to intensify pressure on the government as protesters continue to seek accountability, compensation for suicide victims' families, and far-reaching examination reforms.
As Wangchuk's health continues to decline without any official response to the protesters' demands, the indefinite hunger strike has emerged as a significant flashpoint in the nationwide debate over examination transparency, student welfare, and institutional accountability following the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.
